Elm Academy

Design & Technology

Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that relate to real life, within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. At Elm Academy, design and technology develops children’s skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food.

At Elm Academy children are taught to select and use appropriate tools safely and effectively to make a product. In all areas of design and technology the children are encouraged to consider the effectiveness of their designs and requirements of the product. Every child will have the opportunity to learn and extend their understanding, experience and application in the use of technology, including I.C.T, in as wide a variety of situations as possible.

Our D.T curriculum has linked to other subjects across the curriculum, developing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the topics they are covering in depth. For example, our Year 4 pupils thoroughly enjoyed making a Greek banquet as part of their WOW Day for their Ancient Greek topic.

Furthermore, children throughout the school are taught cooking and nutrition in the curriculum and we provide a curriculum which enables children to make healthy eating choices. We believe teaching pupils to cook is an important part of promoting a whole school approach to health and wellbeing and attainment. We have a dedicated kitchen area that the children enjoy using as part of their cooking experiences, where they are taught safety aspects of cooking and to develop independence, cooking simple nutritious foods.
