School Council & Character Awards

The Elm Academy School Council consists of twelve representatives – one child from each class from Year 1 to Year 6.

A new School Council is appointed every year through a democratic process. Any child in a class can put themselves forward as a class representative. The candidates are encouraged to make a short speech to explain to their class why they should be the School Council representative. The children in the class then vote and the person with the most votes is elected while the person with the second most votes becomes second in command.

School Council meetings take place regularly. All School Council members are responsible for making and maintaining a class suggestion box. At every School Council meeting, the boxes are opened and any suggestions put forward are discussed and voted on, if appropriate. Any suggestions which the School Council would like to implement are presented to the Senior Leadership Team.

Projects the School Council have been involved in include; Elm Academy Character Awards, supporting the Salvation Army and making links with other schools.

When developing the Elm Academy Character Awards, the School Council visited each KS2 class to discuss the character traits they wanted to promote. This is what they came up with:

The pupils have to show these traits in class to earn awards and badges for their school jumpers.

To ensure we are developing pupils’ characters in an age appropriate way we have adapted these Character Awards, in consultation with our KS1 pupils, to encourage pupils to develop their character throughout the school day. Here are the KS1 Character Awards.

Anti-Bullying Well-being Badge
           

We are delighted to announce that Elm Academy has received the Well-being Badge/Award from The Diana  Award.  The Diana Award is a charity which trains our Anti-Bullying Ambassadors across the UK.  They have praised our Ambassadors on their work to promote Anti-Bullying across our community as well as providing support for pupils experiencing bullying.  Activities including hosting anti-Bullying Week, putting different things in place across the school to support well-being and providing assemblies on all up-to-date information regarding what to do if bullying is seen or experienced by the pupils at Elm.
